You must file your asylum application within one year of your last arrival in the United States. Exceptions may be made for fundamental changes in your country or extraordinary events that prevented you from filing within one year of your arrival.
You may include your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 who are in the United States in your asylum petition. This must be done before a final decision is made on your petition.
You may apply for a work permit when: 150 days have passed since your asylum petition was accepted for consideration, and a decision on your petition has not yet been made.
Once you have obtained a work permit, you may apply for a Social Security Card.
Within 2 years of receiving asylum, you can file a petition to reunite with your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21.
One year after receiving asylum, you can apply for a Green Card, and after 5 years, you can apply for U.S. citizenship.
Even if you are denied asylum, an immigration judge may decide to suspend your deportation in accordance with U.S. immigration laws or the UN Convention Against Torture.
